It looks like the Chris Lombard clinics are safe. If you told Beth or Janice you are planning to attend, it is imperitive that you get your deposit in NOW. Please mail to DEBRSC, 80 Lubec Road, Whiting, ME 04691. The Sunday, May 16 clinic has been changed to a Versatility Challenge at Pembroke Fairgrounds. Morning session will focus on practicing a variety of new obstacles and skill-building - afternoon will be a fun competition. There is still room in this clinic. $60 per horse/rider.

Carey Crosby currently has 2 very well made picnic tables at her house that belong to the DEBRSC one purchased by the club, and one by the youth. She will be getting another one that was a donation in memory of ???, Carey encourages anyone who many want to make a donation towards getting 2 or 3 more to contact her at careyc@mgemaine.com . these are made at the bucks harbor prison for the fee of $100.

Little Oak's Candy Kisses

Hey all - please keep Little Oak's Candy Kisses in your thoughts and prayers. Candy belongs to club member Emily Hawkins. She was at a training facility when she managed to get her foot caught between a sliding stall door and the wall. Her back left tendon was severed to the bone. She is currently receiving treatment at Annabessacook Veterinary Clinic.

Club members Carey Crosby and Debbie Olson Smith have plans to attend a Ken McNabb clinic in Douglas, WY this spring. There are still available slots - Lynn Corrigan is your local contact if you're interested.

May 11-15 2010 Riding clinic with Ken McNabb in Douglas, WY.

Cost $1500.00 and includes the clinic fee, your motel, lunches and horse for the week.

Not included, airfare, car rental, breakfast and dinners.

The focus of the clinic will be working cattle. We will start out learning how to read, move, and rope the cattle with the week ending in a small branding where we can put our knowledge to use. There will also be plenty of time for one on one work as well as anything else you would like to learn from Ken. This is a great opportunity to ride ranch broke horses and learn skills you can bring back to your horse.

There will be a benefit supper for the wife and daughter of Joseph Jones on Friday, Nov 6 at the Whiting Town Hall, 4PM. Joseph, the son of club member Linda Huntley was on the F/V Bottom Basher when it went down in the waters off Lubec last week.
I know I can speak for all club members when I say we are all deeply sadden by this tragedy and offer our prayers and support for Linda and her family, as well as Joseph's wife Lisa and daughter Daisy. Sympathy is also extended to the families of the other two men who were on the vessel, Norman Johnson and Daryl Cline.

Available horse
We have a new "guest" at the shelter. Her name is Forevergreen Miriah, but Grace calls her Frances. She's a 23 y.o. registered Morgan mare. Solid chestnut, (except for roaning around her face) She is available for adoption, though I do want to put some more weight on her before letting her go. She is trained English, so she only directs reins. She rides fine in a western saddle, though. We have only ridden her around the farm. We were told she's a great trail horse and we will confirm that once we get her in better condition. She was trained at one time to drive, but it is suspected that she may have had an accident so I am not promoting her as a driving horse. She is very sweet, stands nicely on the crossties, loads/unloads well, handles well on the ground and is very good for the farrier. Under saddle she is somewhat forward but very controllable. I would recommend her for a confident beginner. Probably not for a small child, but teen on up -nice first horse for anyone other than a rank beginner. Strong legs, no signs of arthritis. Great hooves, has been barefoot for years. Her adoption fee will be $350 if she is adopted before December.

Raffle - We are raffling off a Netbook Computer - this is a mini-laptop that does all the stuff the big ones do! It is an ASUS Eee PC 1005HA - Tickets are only $5 each or three for $10. As an added bonus, Calais Computer Plus has offered a free upgrade for the winner. Either an external CD/DVD drive or a memory upgrade, winner's choice. THANKS DANIEL AMBER!!! There will only be 250 tickets sold, so the odds are pretty good! Drawing will be held at the DEBRSC Christmas/Awards banquet. E-mail me if you want tickets. They are also available at Newcomb's Gun and Saddle, Rte. 1 Perry. Or mail your check to FLFES, 576 Shore Road, Perry, ME 04667 - I will make sure your tickets are entered, and return your ticket stubs if you want.

Perry School Christmas Craft Fair - FLFES will have a table at the craft fair on November 14 (9-2PM) Tickets for the raffle will be available as well as a hodge-podge of items for sale. We will also be doing a bake sale and we are looking for donations of baked goods. Particularly pies that can be frozen and put away for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Also, whole quick breads, brownies, cookies, whatever! Please consider donating a baked item to help raise money for this non-profit shelter. We are also looking for any horse-themed items, not necessarily tack or equipment, but decorations, knick-knacks, books, pillows, throws. Any kind of crafty item that could be sold at the fair to help raise money. Miriah needs shots and hay! Thanks!

DEBRSC UPDATE

We had a very light turn out for the St. Jude ride on Sunday.Unfortunately, several riders were out of commission. (Hope you are all back in the saddle soon!) It was a bit brisk, but really not too bad at all. Nice ride. We raised $557 - much less than previous years, but I am sure the hospital and kids will appreciate it.

NOMINATIONS - I am NOT being inundated with nominations for club officers and BOD, folks. We do need people to fill these seats.

I have not received any nominations for VP and have only received two nominations for the Board of Directors. If you were on the board last year and want to serve again, please let me know.

Also, we need nominations for Sportsmanship Award. C'mon people - is there NO ONE in this club deserving of this award this year???

SHAVINGS - If you missed out on shavings this time around and are interested, please let me know. I will try to pull together one more order before the end of the year.

ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET/CHRISTMAS PARTY is scheduled for Sunday, December 6 at 4PM at the Whiting Town Hall. Everyone is welcome, you do not have to be a member to attend this event. The more the Merrier!!

Reminder for those participating in the ON THE TRAIL PROGRAM - Your hours through October 31 must be submitted to Janine on or before November 7 - Please submit neat and legible logs to be tallied for year end awards which will be distributed at the annual Christmas/Awards Banquet.

Your enrollment fee of $15 per rider is due November 1 - or whenever you want to start logging hours for the next season (Season runs November 1 through October 31)

A Message from Beth re: Iggy

On 8/02/09 Iggy was seriously injured while playing in the pasture. Over the course of the last couple months Igg has been seen and treated by veterinarians from Maine to New Hampshire. Igg has had seven sets of x-rays and a complete set of digital x-rays done revealing damage to tendons and ligaments as well as damage to the P3 causing non-articular ringbone and side bone. On 8/27/09 I transported Igg from Apple Creek Veterinary to New England Equine Medical and Surgical Center in Dover NH. Dover did digital x-rays and Nerve blocks and fluid joint tests Igg was worked on by head veterinarian Andris J. Kaneps DVM, PhD, DACVS and assistants, vet students and Michael Davis DVM, MS was on hand also. Igg is now on the mend and doing better everyday. He has the winter off and in the spring will undergo more testing to see when he can be safely started back under saddle again.

I have a few people I would really like to thank that have been there with me through this ordeal. My vets Tanja Ebel and the whole crew at Dover were fantastic. Evan Hawkins for coming out and literally holding my boy up to do his feet because he couldn't stand on his own. Evan has shown superior workmanship and patience and has been an angel through all this. Leslie Gallant who came out even though she was in pain to do Iggs feet while he was under sedation. It takes a lot of guts to do a horse laying down, Evan was there also, I can't thank you two enough. Andrea for the massage she gave Igg it helped him so much. All the prayers that have been said for my boy are paying off he is getting better everyday. Everyone that has stopped in or called your emotional support was more than anyone could ask for. We have a great club and those members who listened to my frustration and crying through all this I thank you.

Bono's Hay for Horses

Bono's Hay for Horses is hanging in there! We just bought 100 bales of this year's crop. Thanks to Ronda Cobb for arranging for this purchase. We got a great deal. The hay is in Topsfield now, but will be transported to Machias, Perry and other locations as needed.

We will be running another fundraising campaign soon, as our coffers are about depleted. As you may remember, last year, we not only were able to supply hay to horses in need, but we were also able to supply grain and shavings. We'd like to be able to do that again this year.

This year is going to be even tougher than last year, so when we run our Hay For Horses campaign, please consider donating. This year's campaign slogan: BUY A BALE FOR BONO'S BUDDIES!

The DEBRSC St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Benefit Trail is scheduled for Saturday, October 10 at the MOOSEHORN WILDLIFE REFUGE, Charlotte Road, Baring. Be ready to ride at 10:30A. Parking will be in the usual place, we will try to have signs ready. Please bring your sponsor sheets and collected donations with you. Janice will collect before the ride.

Here's some information from Janine:

A few changes from last year, we are going to try a driven dressage this year……if enough of you are interested.

PLEASE remember to let us know well ahead if you need corral panels for your horse so we have plenty of time to get them. (AT LEAST A WEEK……two weeks would be better!) Also if you need to plug in a camper…….let us know and we will try and accommodate that also…….first spoken for, first served.

If there is not enough interest in the dressage classes, we will add fault and out instead. OR…….if enough reply and would like an antique carriage class, we could add that also.

Remember…….we do not offer separate classes for mini’s at this point but we do set things up so that Mini’s are “very equal” to the bigger horses! Mini’s have done VERY well here at our driving day in the past, often being one of the day end high point or reserve high point winners!

The mustang round up is only the beginning and part of an over all theme. Our own government is eroding our freedoms. What on this earth would ever make you think that the government would treat this any differently than everything else they have taken over.

We are loosing our freedom and our birthright not to mention material real and tangible property. They have taken land to develop things that are against the constitution, broken their own laws and made up new ones to fit their own needs. They have, (through the EPA, DEP and a multitude of other such organizations) put our country's vegetable and fruit basket all but out of business because of a minnow. They have usurped and taken land for gain of tax purposes. They have eaten away at our liberty from all quarters and you expect them to be forthright and humane? Ha! I am Really getting tired of this take over of our country by the government. What has ever happened to: Of the people, By the people and For the people?

It has come to a government of, for itself and the people can go to hell as far as I can see. I shudder to think what this country will look like in a few years. The only guy I can see with any intestinal fortitude is John Howard the prime minister of Australia. Too bad he isn't American we could vote him in and maybe keep some of our country. He said that if Muslims wanted to practice their Sharia laws they would have to leave Australia. Immigrants have to adapt to our laws not the other way around, he said. That is more of the sentiment we need and that way of thinking is conducive to sovereignty and basic rights as set forth by our founders.

Right now the government is running rough shod over everyone, not just the mustangs. We need people that think like that so we can enjoy our freedoms as we have come to know them. The way we are going, before long we will no longer have the country we love and recognize as America. It saddens me to no end.

Third horse dies in Maine of EEE

Deadly virus can infect humans

STETSON, Maine — A horse in Stetson died last week of Eastern equine encephalitis, the third Maine horse death in August related to the mosquito-borne virus.

The deadly virus, known as EEE, also can infect humans, and appears to be moving into new geographic territory.

“This is the farthest north EEE has ever been detected in this country,” said Dr. Dora Anne Mills, director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, announcing the latest case at a press conference Monday. Mills urged Mainers to protect themselves against mosquitoes in order to avoid contracting the virus.

The horse deaths are “a strong red flag that the risk of EEE is much greater than we thought,” she said. “In the past, we’ve seen it later in the fall. What we’re concerned about now is that it is still very warm out and there are a lot of mosquitoes still biting.”

Horses in the Waldo County towns of Troy and Thorndike died of confirmed EEE earlier this month. Test results from three other dead horses are pending — one each in York County, Cumberland County and the Waldo County town of Unity — as well as from one sick horse in Unity.

State veterinarian Dr. Don Hoenig said infected horses cannot transmit the disease to humans, and mosquitoes cannot pick up the virus by feeding on an infected horse. Mosquitoes become carriers of the virus only by first biting an infected bird — songbirds, pheasant and quail, primarily — and then biting a horse, human or other host, he said.

All horses should be vaccinated yearly against EEE, Hoenig said, especially now that the virus has been found in central and coastal Maine. The disease is almost 100 percent fatal in horses, and a horse can go from seemingly good health to seizures, coma and death within 24 hours, he said.

There is no human vaccine against EEE. Mainers, especially those who live, go to school or spend time near wetland areas, should take extra precautions to protect themselves from exposure to mosquitoes from now until cold weather sets in — including two hard frosts to kill mosquito populations, Mills said. These precautions include wearing long pants, long-sleeved shirts and socks, and applying DEET or another effective insect repellent for extended outdoor activities such as outside work and school field trips.

While cases of EEE in humans are rare, Mills said, the severity of the virus should not be underestimated. Of those humans who become infected, more than 30 percent die, and half of those who survive suffer permanent neurological damage, she said.

Although anyone can be sickened with EEE, children under 15 and adults over 50 are most likely to suffer serious illness, Mills said. Early symptoms are flulike — fever, fatigue and general aches and pains — but also are likely to include neurological elements such as headaches and seizures.

No human case of EEE has ever been confirmed in Maine, but last October, a Massachusetts man died of EEE he may have contracted while vacationing in the Naples area. His was the first Massachusetts death from EEE in a human since 2005, when four cases were reported, including two fatalities.

Because of the concentration of horse cases this summer in Waldo County, the Maine CDC will conduct a public meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at the new Mount View High School in Thorndike.

Teams of 2 will ride together and face obstacles around KD Stable before heading out on the Trail portion. Two trails will be offered, A Challenge Trail for those adventurous at heart and a Relaxed Trail for those wanting to enjoy the experience without stress.

Catagories for Teams will be divided into the Challenge and Relaxed Trails.

Although you must ride with a partner, both do NOT have to be judged.

Riders under age 18 MUST ride with an adult. Two or more teams MAY ride in a group for safety.

Teams are required for safety. Solo Riders may partner up together or ride with a group.

When in doubt, run far, far away.

You can never have too many treats.

Passing gas in public is nothing to be ashamed of.

New shoes are an absolute necessity every 6 weeks.

Ignore cues. They're just a prompt to do more work.

Everyone loves a good, wet, slobbery kiss.

Never run when you can jog. Never jog when you can walk. And never walk when you can stand still.

Heaven is eating at least 10 hours a day... and then sleeping the rest.

Eat plenty of roughage.

Great legs and a nice rear will get you anywhere.

Big, brown eyes help too.

When you want your way, stomp hard on the nearest foot.

In times of crisis, take a poop.

Act dumb when faced with a task you don't want to do.

Follow the herd. That way, you can't be singled out to take the blame.

A swift kick in the butt will get anyone's attention.

BEAUTIFUL TAIL PHOTO CONTEST

Don't forget to get your pictures in for the BEAUTIFUL TAIL PHOTO CONTEST. This contest will be judged on August 8 and the winner will receive a new halter and lead. Entry is $5 per picture and proceeds benefit the DEBRSC general fund. You can e-mail your picture to me, or bring it to the show on August 8.
Rules: write your name and the horse's name on the back of the photo (or include this information if you e-mail the picture to me)

Braid, be-ribbon, flowers, whatever you wish is fine but NO tail extensions allowed.

Everything you wanted to know about your horse's diet but didn't know who to ask. Now you can ask the EXPERT.

Andrew Beals, Poulin Grain's equine nutrition specialist, will be at Double T Farm, Lake Road, Perry on Friday, August 7 at 3PM. This is a hands-on, interactive presentation for all ages.

Is my horse too fat? Too skinny? My horse is hyper! My horse is lazy! Am I feeding him the right amount of hay? Does he need grain if he's on pasture?

All your horse nutrition questions can be answered here! You are invited to bring a sample of your hay for a visual analysis.

TRAIL OBSTACLE COMPETITION -Sunday, July 26

DEBRSC Meeting Notes

We had a good meeting last Wednesday evening. Thanks Kathy and Bill for opening your home to us.

We watched the video entitled "Every Ride, Every Time" and had a short discussion about enforcing a helmet rule for riders 17 and under.

The main arguments FOR a helmet rule:

it will protect a rider's head in a fall
it could instill a life long practice of wearing a helmet

The main argument AGAINST a helmet rule:

it's up to the parents to protect their kids, not the club
it infringes upon people's freedom of choice
it could be the springboard for yet more rules and regulations, which could be enforced against adults who should have the freedom to decide what they do and don't want to do about safety precautions
we could be held liable if a child is injured BECAUSE of a helmet*

*this argument has wobbly legs, as I researched for hours trying to find one incident where a riding helmet CAUSED an injury. Couldn't find any documentation.
The one incident that always comes out in conversation is "Christopher Reeves was wearing a helmet!" - Well according to what I have read, the helmet did nothing to prevent his neck from breaking (no one claims a helmet will) but it did prevent him from suffering severe, or possibly fatal brain damage.

We will lose riders if we enforce a mandatory helmet rule*

* So money is more important that a child's well being?

Most everyone knows what I think about this, and I do have one question for the "naysayers." Why don't you have a problem with any of the other safety rules we enforce, such as: proper riding boots must be worn?

You may post comments here if you wish regarding this topic....

Anyway, we decided that this is contentious enough to mandate a club-wide vote. Not just for those who attend the meetings, (because many who participate in our shows cannot make meetings) and not just something for the board to decide. So, this fall, when you receive your annual officers and Board of directors voting ballot, there will be a question similar to this:

Do you favor imposing a mandatory helmet rule for all riders aged 17 & under, enforceable at all club sanctioned riding events, including horse shows, club-organized trail rides and clinics. Helmets must meet ASTM standards and be SEI approved and be designed specifically for horseback riding.

The Open Youth Command class at the last pleasure show, should have been an English Youth Command class - Points earned will go to English Youth Command as there is no Open Youth Command.

- There will be a work day on Thursday, July 23 at 9AM at the Fairgrounds. We can really use your help. Mowing, weedwhacking, painting, picnic table repair, rock picking, etc. Please bring hammers, wheelbarrows, lawnmowers, weedwhackers.

Prior to the show starting on July 25, Roland will show anyone who is interested how to operate the timers.
Janice and others will be creating checklists for volunteers to use when working at shows. Kitchen, Announcer, Opening & Closing the fairgrounds etc.... Carey will have the check lists typed up and laminated as soon as she can.

Hey all - two things -

We are looking at another truck load of shavings, maybe by the end of June. They will be approximately $4/bale and are well-compressed packed in plastic. This information is provided courtesy of Dave Genadek, a master saddle maker with over 20 years experience making custom saddles. Thank you, Dave!

To find out more about Dave's work and his beautiful saddles, check out www. Aboutthehorse.com. that name pretty much says it all. This part of the web site is taken from my clinic notes. If there is something you believe is incorrect, don't blame that on Dave, blame it on me and drop me a note to set me straight. Here is some of what makes Dave's saddles and saddle making approach different from many others who make saddles.

An 'off the rack' saddle is likely to have a tree that is selected from a very limited selection of trees. To over-generalize a little, there are probably three general basic body types (back and rib cage size and shape) that you will find in horses. The limited tree choices available for most 'off the rack' saddles will fit only one of those three types of body types. They could be loosely described as small (lens shaped rib cage - small wither and flat back), medium (more sprung rib cage - a downhill top line) and large (a fully sprung rib cage). In the 'large' category, you will find many quarter horses, Doc bar quarter horses and old line Tennessee Walkers. Interestingly, the newer line Tennessee Walkers fall into the 'medium' category. Why is this important to know? Because most 'off the rack saddles are built on trees that are designed to fit the 'medium' body shape. That means that the 'large' quarter horses, old line Tennessee Walkers and other large horses, as well as the 'small' horses will be very difficult to fit in an 'off the rack' saddle.

Dave's saddle design is built on a foundation of several different tree sizes. When you go to one of Dave's saddle fit clinics, he will have those bars with him so you can see them on your horse and see which one fits. A side note about gaited horses. To say a saddle it 'a gaited horse saddle' could be somewhat misleading, since there are different body styles within that breed. The question should not be whether a saddle is a gaited horse saddle. The question should be: 'Does the 'gaited horse saddle' fit the gaited horse'? Not all 'off the rack' gaited horse saddles will fit every gaited horse. The saddle portion of the equipment section of our site will be addressed in three sections,
(1) Fitting the Saddle to the Horse,
(2) Fitting the Saddle to the Rider; and
(3) A Brief History of Saddles.

FITTING THE SADDLE TO THE HORSE.

A. TO FIT THE HORSE, LOOK AT THE ANATOMY AND BIOMECHANICS OF THE HORSE AND RIDER

1. A Proper Saddle Fit Will Allow the Ring of Muscles to Help Round the Horse .The horse has a 'ring of muscles' that run under its chest and holds up the sternum. If you scratch your horse's belly, he will lift his back. That is the ring of muscles at work. Your saddle must allow your horse to use that ring of muscles correctly, so that the horse can round his back and collect.
2. A Proper Saddle Fit Will Provide Room for the Spine and Latisimus Dorsi Muscles. Your horse needs a saddle that will carry the rider's weight without interfering with the spinal movement and muscle activity necessary for the horse to move freely and to round its back. A good saddle will allow the latisimus dorsi muscles, which run from the withers to the hip, to move without putting pressure on them. A proper saddle fit allows this by distributing the weight of the rider and saddle on the fascia (non muscle material) on the horse's barrel. A good saddle will have a tunnel that runs under the saddle. If the latisimus dorsi muscles are pinches or restricted by the saddle, they may fire or guard, which will affect the horse's ability to round and move properly.
3. A Proper Set of Bars Will Also Allow Room for Hip Movement, Shoulder Movement and Will Spread the Weight of the Saddle and Rider Evenly Over the Horse's Back.

B. FOUR ASPECTS OF BAR DESIGN ARE VERY IMPORTANT

1. Well Designed Bars Will Provide Proper Weight Distribution over the Horse's Back .A good saddle will distribute the weight of the saddle and rider over a large area. Within reason, the larger the bars, the bigger the area over which the weight is spread. If you look at some of the newer 'off the rack' saddles, you will see bars that are only about two inches wide. For proper weight distribution, the bars should be four or five inches wide.
2. Well Designed Bars Will Allow the Bars to Parallel the Shape of the Horse's Back .This aspect of bar design is called the 'TWIST'. When you look at your horse's back, you will see that there is a change of angle that occurs gradually from the shoulder to the rib cage. A properly fitting saddle must fit the shape of the rib cage and account for that change of angle. This is where the 'small', 'medium' and 'large' rib cage sizes come into play. Most 'off the rack saddles' are designed to fit the 'medium' sized rib cage. Many Mules, Pasos and new line Tennessee Walkers fall into this category.
3. Well Designed Bars Will Lift the Bars Up Off of the Horses Shoulder. This aspect of bar design is called the 'FLARE'. Bars with significant flare will appear to open up wide to avoid putting pressure or restriction on the area of the horse's body that is involved in shoulder movement. If you picture a pair of skis on your horses' back, the front tips of the skis will curl out and away from his shoulders, leaving them room to move.
4. Well Designed Bars Will Lift the Bars Up Off of the Horses Haunches. This aspect of bar design is called the 'ROCK'. The rock of the bars lifts the back of the saddle up off the horse's haunches and allows the hips to move freely up and down.
5. A Summary of Well Designed Bars. Bars should be around four or five inches wide, they should parallel the horse's back, they should be wide in the front and should be high in the back.
6. How Bars Are Commonly Described Does Not Tell You Enough About Their Design. How far apart the bars are varies from one saddle maker to another. Full Quarter Horse Bars are about 6.75 to 7 inches apart. Semi Quarter Horse Bars are about 6.5 to 6.75 inches apart. This is helpful information, but it does not tell you anything about ROCK, TWIST or FLARE. Why is that important? A saddle with a narrow gullet, but with a WIDE FLARE may fit your horses' shoulder. But a saddle with a wide gullet with a NARROW FLARE may pinch your horse's shoulders. This could cause stumbling, lead change problems, self carriage problems, etc.

C. HOW TO TELL IF YOU'RE SADDLE FITS YOUR HORSE

1. Fit the gullet about on the middle of the withers. The wither profile will move about 1 inch in either direction as the horse moves. Some room should be allowed for this movement.
2. Push your hand through the gullet and down the length of the saddle to see if there is a tunnel which makes room for the spine and latisimus dorsi muscles to move properly during the horse's locomotion.
3. Do the same test with your hand from the back of the saddle to see if the tunnel runs the full length of the saddle.
4. Check the FLARE of the bars. When your horse is looking straight ahead, you should be able to run your hand between the front of your saddle and the horse's shoulder. When your horses head is turned to one side, your saddle should be in contact with that side of the shoulder.
5. Check the ROCK of the bars. You should be able to run your hand between the back corner of your saddle and your horse's hip. An oval, rather than a square, saddle skirt.

D. Rigging

1. The purpose of rigging is to hold the saddle quietly on your horse's back. The bars should rest on the stationary part of your horse's back.
2. The rigging should hold the middle section of the bars (which fit well because of proper TWIST) flat on the horse's back. Double or Flat Plate rigging do a good job.
3. When using double rigging, the front and the back cinch should be equally tight. If the back cinch is loose, the saddle will move sideways as well as up and down. This will interfere with the horse's hip and back motion.

E. Skirting

1. Skirting protects the horse from the motion of the stirrup leather.
2. The skirting should not move. The wool on the saddle should protect the horse.
3.There should be NO in skirt rigging. Rigging in the skirt causes the skirting to bear weight. When skirting bears weight, it cannot protect the horse. The skirt will pinch the horse when the rigging is tightened. The horse's body motion will cause the saddle to move backwards on the horse's back. A breast collar will stop that movement, but will probably tip the saddle up on its front end and cause the gullet to pinch the horse's shoulders and force the horse onto its forehand.
4.In skirt rigging came about as a design adjustment which was required when some saddle makers decided to get rid of the rear cinch.

F. Padding

1. Padding is not necessary if your saddle fits property. A good quality Navajo blanket is sufficient.

G. Shims

1. If your saddle does not fit correctly on the horse, you can use padding or shims to try to help that situation. However, remember to pad away from the pressure. That means that, if the saddle is pinching your horse's shoulders or hips, you would not pad at the shoulder. You would pad the bars behind the shoulder which would lift the saddle up off the shoulders or hips.

I would like to welcome club member Evan Hawkins' home after several months in KY for farrier/blacksmithing school. Evan is the son of Janine and Allen Hawkins of Little Oak Farm in Wesley.

Evan will be offering blacksmith and farrier services all over Downeast Maine and beyond. His business with be called Village Blacksmith and Farrier Services. Clinic Cancellation/Substitution

Due to lack of interest in the two-day intermediate/advanced horsemanship clinic with Chris Lombard scheduled for May 20 & 21 has been canceled. In its place we are going to run a two day "Starting the Horse" clinic, as suggested in my previous notice to you.

Here are the details again:

WED MAY 20 & THURS MAY 21 - PEMBROKE FAIRGROUNDS or Double T Farm if it rains
This clinic is for green horses ages 1 and over who are ready to continue with their training. The ultimate goal of this clinic will be for your horse to have his first ride or two. However, those horse ages one to 2 or 2.5 will not necessarily get this far, for obvious reasons. Chris will work with these younger ones to the point that is appropriate for the horse's age and development. Only horses 2 to 2.5 and older will actually be ridden. Chris will decide as each horse is evaluated.
Your horse should be at least halter broke for this clinic.
If you are interested in this please let me know. The cost will be $150 for both days, if we get a full roster of 8 participants. It will be slightly more if we get less.You must participate for both days with the same horse.

News from the DEBRSC Youth Group

Hello all ~

We had a very productive meeting of the DEBRSC youth group.

Members present were: Anna Jean McClure, Emily Hawkins, Grace Barstow, Alex Hanscom and Gabrielle Watts. Adult advisor: Dawn McClure and parents of the children were in attendance as well.

The following junior members have joined the group, but were unable to attend yesterday's meeting: Maggie Barker, Sara Longstaff, Joelle Bronson and Emily O'Neill.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING MEMBERSHIP

The group decided that in order to reap the benefits of the youth committee, members must participate in at least one (or maybe it was two, I will check with the official notetaker-Emily) meeting, one fundraiser and volunteer at least once during the year at a show or clean up day. This participation entitles the member to join in the clinics, field trips and other activities.
If you are member of the youth group, you need to let the record-keeper (Grace Barstow) know when you have participated in something. She will record your work and confirm your eligibility for various activities.

And what are those activities, you may ask?

First, on April 12 at 1:30PM there will be a riding clinic at Double L Stable in Hancock. This is a free clinic for DEBRSC YC members only! You may bring your own horse (proof of vaccinations required) or you may ride one of Wanda's horses. Please let me know if you plan to attend this clinic and if you are bringing your own horse or going to use one of Wanda's.

June 6 - Show Prep Clinic. This clinic is for YC members who would like to know what to expect at one of our horse shows. The clinic will be held at Pembroke Fairgrounds (pending approval by the PTA and the DEBRSC) - and will include instruction on showmanship, pleasure, equitation, trail and command. Basic patterns and rules for games classes will also be reviewed. Participants will learn proper ring attire and ettiquette. This is a free clinic for all YC members and will be conducted by Tobbie Ackley of Double T Farm in Perry.

The Youth Show is tentatively scheduled for September 19 (pending PTA and DEBRSC approval). This show is open to any youth rider 5-17 years old. You do not have to be a member of the YC or the DEBRSC - it's an open show and will be run like the last two years. A fun competition where entry fees are school supplies, snacks or horse items - and these are also the prizes.

The group also discussed possible field trips to UMO's equine program in Orono, a trip to an interesting breed farm (ie Shires, minis or maybe something) - or maybe even a trip to a Standardbred farm where the train and race the horses -or perhaps a Standardbred rehab and retraining facility, where these lovely horses are given a chance at a second career. Additionally, we talked about having a vet or other equine professional come and talk to the kids about a variety of subjects.

FUNDRAISERS - The kids have planned their first fundraiser. It's a raffle for a "Spring Clean Up" Bucket. The bucket will be filled with all sorts of goodies to help you get your horse ready for show season. Watch the blog and the website for information on what you can win, including grooming supplies, a free hoof trim, a riding lesson and much more! The kids are going to approach area businesses to get donations for the bucket, as well as accepting donations from club members. Tickets will be on sale soon and will be 50 cent each, three for $1, or twenty for $5. The drawing will be held at the Chris Lombard Trail clinic which will take place on May 24 at Little Oak Farm.
They will also be selling hamburgers and hotdogs at this clinic. We discussed other activities such as a bottle drive. They decided that the saddle donated by Double L Stable should be auctioned off on ebay rather than try to raffle it. It's a rather wide saddle and will only fit a certain number of horses. So we figured it would be better to just let it go to the highest bidder on ebay.
Oh, and they are going to offer tack cleaning services at the shows. Bring your tack and have it cleaned for cheap money!

Th next meeting of the YC will be held during the regular DEBRSC meeting on April 25 at the home of Kathy and Bill Attick in Dennysville. Hope to see you there!

Sunday’s meeting was very well attended with standing room only for some! Thanks again to Leslie, Ron and Benjamin Gallant for allowing us to have the meeting in their lovely home.

The first item on the agenda (after the secretary’s and treasurer’s reports) was the Show Committee report.

Class lists are pretty much the same as last year with the following changes:

It was reported that we will have more PeeWee Riders this year, so we have split the PW Open Pleasure/Equitation into two classes: PW Open Pleasure and PW Open Equitation.

We have added an additional driving class for the minis – Mini Driving -Pleasure Reinsmanship

The order of the classes will change, so that the Adult, Youth and Walk-Trot classes will not be grouped all together, one after another. (ie Adult Equitation, Adult Pleasure, Adult Command) The reason we did this in the first place was to limit tack changes for people sharing horses. The reason for the change is to allow a rider to get a horse that might be having a bit of difficulty out of the ring between classes to allow for schooling, mental break. This certainly makes sense to me. Hopefully, we won't have tack change conflicts.

Class lists will be posted on the DEBRSC website at www.debrsc.com (note the site is at two locations now, but eventually I will be dropping the www.debrsc.110mb.com free site and we will just be using the www.debrsc.com site).

Club member Ginger Cobb suggested we do a flag presentation before each show. We have done this before and people really do appreciate the gesture. It is appropriate protocol at most public events, so it would be a good idea to start doing this again. Ginger will coordinate this effort and make sure it happens at every show.

Ginger also suggested that the club participate more in local parades. While we cannot ride in a parade as an official “club activity” – (as this would incur insurance fees of $100 per event) members are invited to ride in any local parade on their own behalf. Ginger and Michael Moores will let people know when and where the various parades are being held.

Next item on the agenda was CLINIC COMMITTEE Report.

Let me start off by saying the clinic committee, headed up by Mark Staggs and Beth Atwood, with help from several other committee members, did an excellent job of organizing these clinics, getting input from club members and making decisions based on that input. Through lengthy discussion at Sunday’s meeting, the following clinic schedule/format and prices were set:

Only members in good standing are eligible for clinic participation. If you have not paid your 2009 dues, you will not be able to do the clinics. So the moral is: Get your dues into Janice!

TEAM PENNING- May 16 & 17

This is a great deal of fun. You will learn the basics of cattle sorting and team penning. We can have up to 15 riders and it will be somewhere in the vicinity of $40 per day. Pembroke Fairgrounds. Chris Lombard – May 20-24, 2009

Wednesday and Thursday May 20 & 21 – Two-day Intermediate/Advanced Horsemanship. Limit 8 riders – same riders, both days. $150 for the two days.

Friday, May 22 – One-on-one with Chris. One-hour private sessions to work on whatever you want, (except you can’t ‘work on’ Chris; sorry ladies, he has a GF). $75 per session. (you may split your hour with one other person if you wish). Limit 8.

Saturday – May 23 –Two clinics:

Morning session will be a 3-hour beginner youth clinic for our younger beginner riders, especially those for whom a full day clinic would be too much. We are suggesting 6-12 year olds who are just beginning to ride on their own ( i.e. PW riders)

In the afternoon there will be a 5-hour session for older youth & adult – beginner/basic horsemanship. The cost for these sessions will vary depending on the number of people involved. It should run between $40-$60 with the beginner youth paying a little less for their shorter session.

Sunday – May 24 – Trail Clinic – Open to confident riders of all ages who want to work on trail issues. Are obstacles like water crossings, brush piles, etc, buddy sour, must be a leader, racing ahead, issues for you and your horse? This is the place to work it out! Keep in mind, the trail ride will last as long as it takes for Chris to help every horse overcome its problem. Cost: $60 Limit 15 riders.

These clinics, with the exception of the trail clinic, will all be held at Pembroke Fairgrounds, weather permitting. If inclement weather, they will be held at Double T Farm, Perry.

Other discussions

It was decided that a $5 per individual/family spectator fee will be charged at all clinics, with the exception of the Kevin Crane clinic. He requires a $25 per day per person auditing fee. However, Mark is going to speak to Kevin about reducing this rate.

Club member Deb McKay is making buttons to give out to those people paying spectator fees.

Fundraising Committee Report

The fundraising committee had hoped to organize a Harvest Fair type of event at the fairgrounds for August. However, due to some legal issues, we will have to table that until we get better insurance coverage at the fairgrounds. In order to do that, some serious demolition/removal has to happen. We will discuss this further at the Pembroke Trotting Association meeting on April 1 at 6PM at the Legion Hall on Front St., Pembroke.

The club will be ordering iron-on patches featuring our logo. These are high-quality patches that adhere to just about anything cloth (that you can iron). The patches will sell for $5 each.

We will be having a “BEAUTIFUL TAIL PHOTO CONTEST!” This will take place this summer, but we wanted to give you heads up to start preparing those beautiful horse tails. Contestants can submit a color photo of their horses’ tails. Braided, be-ribboned, au-natural. No tail extensions allowed. No “photo-shopped” or otherwise “doctored” photos will be accepted. (you can adjust exposure, brightness, contrast). Entry fee will be $5 and the winner will receive a halter and matching lead. Watch your e-mail for more information about this contest. Photos will be judged at our July 11 show. You can mail or e-mail your photos.

We discussed the possibility of holding a yard sale or farmers market in Jonesboro at some point. We will look into this and get back to you.

However, she does make some observations about cheap tack and what to look for when you are buying a saddle. She also has some examples of nice stuff (I don't agree with some of what she finds beautiful -but to each her own).

MeQHA to offer Open Breed W/T Classes

Maine Quarter Horse Association (MeQHA) offering open breed W/T classes

In order to attract new members and riders, the MeQHA has decided to offer three classes open to ALL BREEDS.

Adult Walk-Trot (12 years and older) -all breeds (you may enter either English or Western)

Green Horse Walk-Trot (non-age defined) -all breeds - your green horse must not yet be loping - WESTERN

Green Horse Walk-Trot (non-age defined) -all breeds - your green horse must not yet be cantering- HUS

In addition to these classes, the MeQHA is considering adding an open breed showmanship classes for the participants of the above mentioned classes. The MeQHA would like to know if you are interested in participating in these classes AND would the addition of the showmanship class add to your level of interest?

STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Nine

AN ACT relative to equine licenses.

Be it Enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General
Court convened:

1 New Subdivision; Equine Licenses. Amend RSA 435 by inserting after
section 41 the following new subdivision:

Equine Licenses

435:42 Procuring License. Every owner or keeper of an equine as
defined by RSA 436:93 4 months old or over shall annually, cause it to
be registered, numbered, described, and licensed for one year in the
office of the clerk of the city or town in which the equine is kept.
The license shall be furnished by the clerk at the expense of the city
or town. Regardless of when the license is obtained, the license shall
be effective from May 1 of each year to April 30 of the subsequent year.

435:43 Vaccination Required. Before a license is issued under the
provisions of this subdivision, the owner or keeper of an equine shall
furnish to the clerk verification from a licensed veterinarian that
the equine has been vaccinated against rabies

435:44 Part of Year. An owner of an equine may at any time have it
licensed until the ensuing May 1 and a person becoming the owner or
keeper of an equine not duly licensed after May 1 shall cause it to be
registered, and licensed as provided in RSA 435:42.

435:45 Transfer. A license duly recorded shall be valid in any part of
the state, and may be transferred with the equine licensed.

435:46 Fees.

I. The fee for every license for a year or portion of a year shall be
$25 for all equines.

II. Of the fee described in paragraph I:

(a) $10 shall be retained by the municipality to be used for animal
control costs.

(b) $10 shall be deposited in the general fund.

435:47 Payment of Fees. Clerks of the towns and cities shall issue
equine licenses, receive the money for the licenses, and pay the same
into the treasuries of their respective towns and cities on or before
June 1 each year. The clerks shall return to their respective town or
city treasurer a sworn statement of the amount of moneys thus received
and paid over by them.

435:48 Records.

I. Clerks of towns and cities shall keep a record of all licenses
issued by them, with the names of the keepers or owners of equines
licensed, and the names, registered numbers and descriptions of all
such equines. Clerks of towns and cities shall furnish yearly to the
local governing body a list of those owners who have failed to renew
their license for use in preparing the warrant of unlicensed equines.

II. With the owner’s consent, a veterinarian may report the
euthanizing or death during treatment of a licensed equine to the town
or city clerk in order to have the record reflect that the equine was
euthanized or died. A veterinarian providing such a report may also
provide the town or city clerk with the mailing and street addresses
of the owner of the equine. Written reports, if any, shall be
destroyed after receipt by the town or city clerk, and any resulting
record reflecting the equine’s death shall not specify the manner or
cause of death.

435:49 Account. Each city and town treasurer shall keep an accurate
and separate account of all moneys received and expended by such
treasurer under the provisions of this subdivision relating to equines.

435:50 Forfeiture. Whoever is the owner or keeper of an equine and who
fails to license or renew the equine license pursuant to RSA 435:42
shall forfeit $25 to the town or city clerk of the municipality in
which the equine is kept. If the forfeiture is not made to the town or
city clerk within 15 calendar days of the notice of forfeiture, the
case may be disposed of in a district court as a violation with a fine
not to exceed $50, notwithstanding the provisions of RSA 651:2, IV. A
forfeiture shall not relieve the owner or keeper of the requirement of
proper licensing of the equine as required by RSA 435:42. Any
forfeitures collected under this section may be retained by the city
or town for the administration and enforcement of this chapter.

435:51 State Veterinarian’s Fund.

I. There is hereby established in the office of the state treasurer a
state veterinarian’s fund which shall be kept distinct and separate
from all funds. Five dollars from each fee collected in RSA 434:47
shall be credited to such fund. Such fund shall be nonlapsing and
continually appropriated to the department of agriculture, markets and
food, state veterinarian for the carrying out of his or her duties.

II. The fee established under RSA 435:47 shall accrue and be paid to
the department on June 1 of each year.

2 New Subparagraph; State Veterinarian’s Fund. Amend RSA 6:12, I(b) by
inserting after subparagraph (276) the following new subparagraph:

(277) Moneys deposited in the state veterinarian’s fund established in
RSA 435:51.

3 Effective Date. This act shall take effect July 1, 2009.

HB 427-FN-A-LOCAL

AN ACT relative to equine licenses.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The Department of Agriculture, Markets, and Food and the New Hampshire
Municipal Association estimate this bill will increase state and local
revenue, and increase local expenditures by an indeterminable amount
in FY 2010 and each year thereafter. There will be no fiscal impact on
county revenue or state and county expenditures.

METHODOLOGY:

The Department of Agriculture, Markets, and Food states that this bill
will require that all equines in the state are licensed annually for
$25 collected by the town or city clerk in the municipality in which
they are kept, with the licensing fee revenue being distributed
amongst the municipalities involved ($10), the state general fund
($10), and a newly established, continually appropriated State
Veterinarian’s fund ($5). Using 2 different formulas, the Department
estimated between 19,000 and 24,000 horses will require licensure in
the state, with the number remaining static from year to year. The
Department further assumed an estimated owner compliance of 80%. The
range of the estimated revenue increase annually is as follows:

The Department also states the bill will require administrative work
to process the receipts. It assumes that this work will be undertaken
by a Data Control Clerk II (LG 12, Step 5) currently on staff at the
Department and will require approximately a week’s worth of time.
While this bill is not requesting additional positions, the Department
states the additional work required under this proposal may impact the
existing duties of the Department’s current staff member. The
Department also estimates that there would be an indeterminable
increase to local expenditures, as the various town/city clerks would
be responsible for collection of the fees and its associated cost.

The New Hampshire Municipal Association states that this bill would
increase local revenue by $10 for each license granted (to be used for
animal control costs) and $25 for each forfeiture collected for non-
compliance (may be used to fund enforcement of this bill), but
maintains that it cannot estimate the total impact on local revenue.
The Association also states that the proposal would increase local
expenditures by an indeterminable amount for collection costs.

We had a great turn out for our first meeting of 2009. Thank you Marcia for hosting it. We had a ton of excellent food and got a lot of things rolling for the new year. You'll notice there are a lot of dates to remember. I will be putting these dates on the blog calendar.

OLD BUSINESS
We discussed the need for the rules poster. Emily Hawkins is (ahem, still) working on this... but she promises to have it completed before the first show. Partly to blame is Mom because she decided it needs to be on something more permanent (i.e. plywood) so Emily has to start over - however, it was suggested that rules should be posted in more than one location.... so keep that first one Em.

I gave an update on Bono's Hay for Horses: We have $412 in the bank and approximately 87 bales of hay. If you know of anyone in need this winter, please send them in the direction of a BHH committee member. We have helped three people through some rough spots so far.

There will be a work day at the fairgrounds on March 22 at 11AM. We have a lot of work to do because we never did get to our last work day for 2008. Please mark your calendar now to make time to come out to the fairgrounds (weather permitting of course) and help prepare for our upcoming show season. There is something for everyone to do, inside, outside, heavy stuff, not-so-heavy stuff.... Please come out and help.

During shows, parking (including trucks and trailers) on the track alongside the ring will now be prohibited. This area needs to be clear for horses gathering at the gates (both ends), and for access for carts and carriages warming up. We will be designating new parking areas to make up for this lost space. We hope that you will abide by this restriction for the sake of safety.

NEW BUSINESS

MOOSEHORN ADVISORY - Bill and Kathy Attick reported that the Moosehorn holds an advisory meeting monthly, and has requested representation from the equestrian community. Marcia Rogers volunteered to attend the monthly meeting and Kathy Attick will be the alternate. Thanks to both volunteers for helping keep our voices heard at the Moosehorn and ensuring our riding privileges/rights remain intact.

2009 On the Trail Program - is off to a great start. If you haven't signed up or renewed for this year, please do right away. Your hours only count from the time you sign up or renew. AND you must have your dues to the DEBRSC current in order to accumulate hours. Please call Janine at 255-6250 FMI. 2009 Shows - It was agreed that there will the usual 3 Pleasure Shows this year. We decided to add one more Game Show for a total of 4 game shows. That actually increases a gamer's opportunities to earn points toward the Year End High Point Trophies...

Judges - Janine and I have been in touch with potential judges. It was decided that judges would be paid $250. If we have a particularly good turn out, the secretary and the treasurer may decide to pay out a bit more.

Committees:

SHOW COMMITTEE will meet on February 28 at Little Oak Farm (Hawkins) -Rte 9 Wesley at 11AM. (pot luck!) The committee will be recommending: show dates, point classes, class lists (order of go); The committee now has the added responsibility of arranging for volunteers/crew for each show and also will be in charge of canceling due to weather.The show committee will also consider other types of year end awards (in lieu of trophies for some classes) -
If you have suggestions for the committee, please contact a committee member before their meeting. Committee Members:

They will be meeting soon and would like to know what date works best for you. If you are a Jr. Member and would like to participate in some of the activities they will plan, please e-mail Dawn McClure at dwnmcclure@yahoo.com and let her know! Remember, you must be a paid member of the DEBRSC to be part of the youth group.

We discussed some Pembroke Trotting Association issues, but most of this discussion is off the record as it was not an official meeting. The First meeting of the PEMBROKE TROTTING ASSOCIATION for 2009 will be held on April 1 at 6PM at the Legion Hall on Front St, Pembroke. The success of the DEBRSC is very dependent upon the success of the PTA. We are always looking for new and active members.

Why We Ring Our Anvil
and, Whence Comes The Luck of the Horseshoe

IMAGINE . . .

THE old blacksmith is "sitting" with one hip propped on his anvil. Gathered around his feet are three or four little barefoot children. Obviously one of the kids has asked a question because in a deep Irish brogue, you hear the blacksmith saying,

"So you want to know why we sometimes tap our anvil while we work do ye?"

WELL then, Once upon a time long long ago and far far away; on an island where the grass is emerald green,
A VILLAGE SMITH was shoeing a horse at his open air shop. His large anvil rang with each blow to the shoes. Standing quietly in the shade of the spreading chestnut tree, the horse waited patiently.
THE DEVIL, passing by, heard the ringing of the anvil and decided to see what was going on. He stood watching as the blacksmith made a wonderful set of new shoes for the horse.
THE SMITH then proceeded to trim the horse's hooves and nail the shoes in place. The horse stood quietly as this was done, and when the smith finished, the owner of the horse mounted his steed and took him for a trot down the road.
THE HORSE was noticeably happy with his new shoes, for he danced and he pranced all the way to the corner and back.
SEEING THIS, the Devil being a hoofed creature himself, decided that he must have a set of these wonderful shoes. He approached the smith and told him to prepare a set of shoes for him.
THE SMITH (realizing that this was the Devil himself), made a set of shoes too small, trimmed the hooves too short and drove several close nails in each of the devils hooves. He also clinched them quite heavily so they would not come off easily. The Devil in terrible pain, lame and very sore footed went running away and suffered for many days.
SO to this very day when ever the Devil hears an anvil ringing he makes it a point to stay as far away as possible.
THIS is also why hanging a horseshoe over the door keeps the Devil away!
THERE be two ways to hang a shoe. The blacksmith will hang a shoe with the heels down, so that the luck of the shoe may pour over his forge. But YE must hang a shoe with the heels UP so that the luck will remain in your house!
AND ye canna just use a shoe ye find by the side of the road. For when the shoe was lost, the luck was also lost from the shoe. Instead, you must go to the blacksmith and buy an old shoe that he has taken off of the horse's hoof. For when he removed the shoe, he removed the luck with it, and tis still in the shoe!

"Here's your gun," Ron the head cowboy said as he passed me a loaded revolver in its' holster.

I took the holstered gun from his hand and looked up at him. "Last time I fired a gun I was a teenager," I said. My father was a Maine State Policeman and gunsmith, but he had passed away when I was 13.

"You gonna feel like you can handle it?" He said looking me in the eye, asking the question directly.

I thought about it. Then looked him back in the eye. "Yeah."

Ron is currently the head cowboy at the Rancho de la Osa guest ranch in Arizona, where I use to work as a cowboy six years ago. I don't know his age, probably in his late fifties I guess. He's a seen it all and done it all cowboy, who knows the horses, the land, and the job. He currently runs a great operation at the ranch looking over the horses, cattle, and the guests. I got along with him great and really enjoyed working with him. I was visiting my old ranch with my friend Charlie, and since they were very busy at this time and they had more guests than they could really handle, and since Ron was quite sick and couldn't really work, Charlie and I were put back to work running the rides. This was okay with me - I loved that job.

One of the new rules Ron had instituted was that all cowboys and wranglers, if they felt comfortable with it, carried firearms. There were definitely viable reasons for this: the ranch was right on the border in one of the hottest spots for citizens of Mexico to illegally cross into the United States; banditos roamed the desert there ready to rob these people (knowing the people crossing the border were carrying their life savings); drug runners had been running drugs back and forth over the border in this area for years; and the wild dogs that had plagued our cattle, plus other desert creatures that could be dangerous. So there were reasons sure enough, even if the main reason was just as a deterent.

Still the ranch was a very safe place, and all the rides had been nothing but completely safe through the years. So with that in mind I decided I would take the gun and just be safe and leave the first chamber empty.

Three days later we were taking a large ride, 20 guests or so, along a hilltop, heading back to the ranch with great views in all directions. There were four of us running the ride. Cammy was leading, Charlie was in the back, and Ron and I were out-riders, meaning we could just ride wherever we pleased. I was riding Jake, a 12 year old bay Quarter Horse who was maybe the toughest most athletic horse I have ever rideen. I knew him well, we had history.

"What's that over there?" asked a guest.

Ron pulled his horse, Chewy, to a fast stop and stood up in his stirrups to get a better look at the three shapes that were running along a dry river bed at the bottom of the hill. "It's them wild dogs that been taking down our baby cattle!" he shouted and in no time he was back down into the saddle, his spurs to the side of Chewy, and he was in a dead gallop down the rocky hill, crashing through brush. "Come on, Chris!" I heard him shout as he darted around mesquite.

For a split second I thought about where this could lead. But I had to go. I couldn't let him go alone.

I turned Jake down the hill and asked for speed. Jake gave it, as was his way. We cut and turned around rock, cactus, and mesquite, creating little landslides in the dirt as we went. I leaned far back in the saddle for balance. We crashed through the brush until we hit the dry sandy riverbed and with nothing but open air ahead of us now I asked Jake for his strength - galloping - and we hit his full speed, sand churning and exploding underneath us like the wake from a boat.

Up ahead was Ron, galloping, right on the heels of the wild dogs... and he was taking out his rifle from the sheath tied to his saddle...

THE BEGINNING WITH THE HORSE

This past November I produced my first horse training DVD entitled "Beginning With the Horse". It was a lot of fun and a lot of hard work, and I am very excited about how it came out. It is not a "starting the horse to ride video" though. Beginning With the Horse focuses on how we can establish a foundation of respect, confidence, and communication with the horse on the ground and in the saddle for horses and owners of all levels and all styles of horsemanship. It is for beginner and advanced riders alike. It runs about 2 hours long with the first hour devoted to groundwork and the second hour devoted to riding. It is still in the editing process and should be available in March.

A friend of mine, horse trainer Karen Greenberg of Mt. Desert Island, told me about this website - www.HorseFlix.com - and I love it. Horseflix is just like Netflix, where movies are sent to you via the mail and you have a while to watch them and then you just put them back into a prepaid envelope and pop them back in the mail and then more movies are sent to you. Horseflix focuses solely on horse videos though from feature movies to training to documentaries. They have many dressage videos, all the Parelli videos, Clinton Anderson, Mark Rashid, and many others. My favorites so far have been Klaus Ferdidand Hempfling's "Dancing With Horses", and check out "The Path of the Horse" for a great documentary.

THE HORTHEAST HORSEMAN'S CONFERENCE AND TRADE SHOW

I will again be doing two presentations at this years Northeast Horseman's Conference at the Augusta Civic Center on January 17th and 18th.

Saturday the 17th at 2 p.m -- How Horses Think and Learn: An understanding of horse training philosophy
Sunday the 18th at 2 p.m. -- Finding the Confidence You Need: How to work through your anxiety and fears

**THE CABIN FEVER CLINIC at PINELAND FARMS**

On Saturday January 31st I will be doing a clinic at Pineland Farms' Broadpark Facility (heated indoor) in New Gloucester, Maine, with the clinic being sponsored by www.NickerNews.net.

The clinic will start at 9 a.m. with me working with participants and their horses on groundwork until 12 noon where there then will be a lunchbreak. During the lunchbreak I will be doing a bareback and bridleless riding demonstration (I love doing this) and certified equine massage therapist Ashley Hutchinson will be doing a massage and saddle fitting demonstration. Then from 1 - 4 p.m. I will be working with clinic participants and their horses on riding (I will not be starting any horses to ride - horses must be walk/trot at least).

Cost to participate with your horse for one session (either the groundwork session or the riding session) is $75, and to participate in both sessions the cost would be $130. If you want to just come and watch, the auditing fee is $15. Make sure to bring a chair and some lunch.

Ron was at a gallop, trailing behind the dogs, and now he had his rifle in his hand.

With Jake being one of the fastest horses on the ranch I was able to catch up in no time and when I yelled "Coming up behind you, Ron!" I could see a look of surprise on Ron's face when he saw I was there with him so fast. He then put his rifle to his shoulder, took aim at the dog closest to him, and pulled the trigger.

Something in his old rifle had jammed and it couldn't fire. He yelled at it, all frustrated, and then looked to me.

"Ride up on there and shoot 'em!" he yelled.

As I remember it, it feels like a long time, the thinking I did at that moment. It was probably only one seconds' worth really. But I thought about the dogs. They were mangy. Two were scrawny and one was huge. They were wild and looked it. But they had lives and they were just trying to survive, like all living creatures and I remember now what someone once said to me about horses - that all living creatures value their lives just as much as you do yours. It's a simple thing to say really, but think about it. Even the tiniest thing on earth thinks its' life is just as important as yours.

But these dogs had killed the ranch cattle, the young ones. There was no real right and wrong here, just who was going to survive.

But I couldn't shoot at these dogs. And I had never shot at anything from horseback. And I didn't know if Jake was gunbroke. So with all these things in mind I came up with a different idea...

"You're the better shot! Take the gun!" I yelled to Ron as I held my pistol out to him. Still at a gallop we rode up beside each other, me holding my gun out to him and he holding his rifle out to me. We then looked each other in the eye - someone was going to have to let go of their reins and grab the other guys' gun in order for this mid-gallop exchange to work. Since I was the guy who wasn't going to be doing any shooting, I decided it would be me.

I let go of the reins and quickly snatched the rifle from Ron's hands and with his now open hand he took the pistol from mine. With no steering Jake veered off course. I rgabbed the reins and got him going in the right direction again as Ron ran up ahead after the dogs.

And then I remembered...

I rode up fast behind Ron and tried to yell something to him.

"The first two chambers are empty!" I yelled. On that particular day, I only loaded four bullets into the revolver, leaving the first two empty.

But he didn't hear me and he went to fire.

He looked at the gun and then tried to fire again.

Click.

"Misfire!" He yelled. And then I can't say some of the stuff he yelled after that. He brought his horse to a stop, still cursing his two guns. I came up beside him, already a bit embarassed. I could feel my cowboy reputation was about to take a hit on this one.

"Ahhhh... the first two chambers are empty," I said to Ron, out of breath from our run.

Ron looked at me in disbelief. He then immediately laughed, knowing me I guess and he figured my reasoning for leaving the first two chambers empty. We walked Jake and Chewy back toward the ride, talking about the chase, and how well the horses ran.

Cowboy work is a lot different than the horse work I do here in the Northeast. Out there on the ranch there is a raw, deep feeling to how the horses see their lives, their work, and their survival. What I remember about that day the most was how Jake ran so hard, ready to follow me and my decisions. It's more than training out there I guess, its' about survival. And in that, I remembered how that way of life out there for the horses and their riders is what led me to my first real bond with a horse, Alto. And how Alto led me to understand things that I know feel with my horse, Rocky.

Look out, Rocky. For tomorrow's session -- I'm going to introduce you to something called "gunbroke"...

Please join us for the first 2009 meeting of the Down East Border Riders Saddle Club. Sunday, January 11 at 11AM. The meeting will be held at Marcia Rogers' home on Rogers Lane, Calais. From Rte 1 (near Taylor's Furniture) take Hardscrabble Road about 1 mile. You will see the street sign that says Rogers Lane on the right. Turn before the red and yellow barn, up the hill to the house.

This will be a potluck, please bring a dish to share. We can all catch up and then will be discussing formation of various committees for the 2009 Season. Show committee, fundraising committee, clinic committee, etc. We will announce voting results and take care of whatever else needs to be attended to.

Please try to make this meeting, it's one of the most important of the year. If you want to be involved with the activities for 2009, please make plans to attend.

Quality Hay Alternatives for Your Horse

A good hay alternative for your horse has fiber and fat levels close to the amounts found in traditional hay.

A prolonged drought, as occurred in many areas of the country this past summer, will drastically decrease the hay availability, driving the price up—if you can even find any in your area to purchase. Many local farmers will be forced to keep all the hay they’ve baled for their own livestock, eliminating hay sales for the year.

You may be forced to search for hay in adjoining states, but prices will probably be sky-high due to both shipping costs—think gasoline—and, of course, everyday price gouging. You’ll also have to be on the alert for hays over a year old appearing on the market. These hays are faded, overly dry and lack that nice hay scent. If you’re tempted to buy old hay, thinking it’s better than nothing, be careful.

Mold growth increases exponentially with time, even in hays that were initially well cured. In addition, the breakdown of the leafier tissues contributes to fine hay dust, a significant respiratory irritant. This crumbling often results in the most nutritious portions of the hay falling to the ground when you open the bale or load it into the rack. Molds and bacteria insidiously rob the hay of protein and of carbohydrates untilmoisture levels drop too low to support their growth. Vitamin A levels plummet in old hays, too, and you may need to increase vitamin and mineral supplementation.

Alternatives

Bagged Hay:Pelleted or cubed hay is the closest to baled. In fact, it’s identical except for particle size. Cubed hay has a longer particle size and will remain in the stomach, helping to buffer acid, longer than pelleted hays. It also ferments more slowly in the hind gut.

Most large feed/farm stores carry some type of hay pellet or cube, often a variety. If they don’t, they can almost certainly special order it for you. Talk to the store manager and the region distributor, if necessary.

Explain that you prefer a grass hay pellet, or mixed grass and alfalfa rather than straight alfalfa if you’ll be using large amounts. This is simply because alfalfa is more difficult to balance nutritionally, especially the major minerals, calcium and phosphorus. Once you have located a source, you can contact the manufacturer directly and ask for average analysis figures so that you can pick a supplement that best complements the product

Hay pellets and cubes have a long shelf life, as long as baled hays—a bit longer, actually, since they’re bagged and more protected. You might also get away with feeding up to 20 to 25% less, by weight, than you did with loose hays because there is less waste and somewhat higher digestibility.

The major drawback here is price. Prices vary by region, the type of product and how far it was shipped, but, in general, cubes and pellets will cost about twice what baled hay does in a normal year of hay supplies.

Straw:You’ve probably noticed long ago that may horses eat straw. This isn’t just a matter of boredom or "being apig."

Straw can have a significant level of simple sugars and starches that make it taste good.

Most people think of straw as nothing but roughage with no nutritional value, but this isn’t true. Straw is surprisingly good as a calorie source. Oat straw, for example, contains about 80% of the calories as oat hay.

Protein takes a hard hit, though, coming in at only around 50% as high as hays. Minerals are somewhat lower than in hays, and oat straw (most digestible) is particularly low in calcium. A strong plus in favor of straw is that the high fiber content makes it slowly move through thegut and slow to ferment. Your horse will have a full, satisfied feeling.

For short-term feeding during shortage situations, select a clean, fresh smelling, mold-free oat straw. To correct the protein and mineral problems, feed 0.75 to 1 lb. of alfalfa pellets or cubes per pound of straw. This is likely to be significantly less expensive than relying on only hay cubes or pellets.

To boost the efficiency of fermentation of this high-fiber diet, consider adding Ration Plus (www.rationplus.com, 800-728-4667) or another good probiotic supplement. Note: Straw feeding isn’t an option for horses with difficulty chewing or weanlings that don’t yet have efficient fermentation capacities.

Beet Pulp:This is a hay-stretcher option that will work for all age groups and is calorie dense to boot. Most horses do well on beet pulp. Despite whatever rumors you may have heard or read, beet pulp won’t add excessive sugar and starch calories to the ration, and works well in horses with dental problems. Beet pulp is highly fermentable in the equine hind gut.

You can figure on beet pulp providing about twice as many calories as your regular hay, so for every 10 lbs. of hay the horse was getting, you can substitute 5 lbs. of hay and 2.5 lbs. (dry weight) of beet pulp. Since beet pulp can soak up as much as four times its weight in water, your horse actually ends up eating more pounds and will feel satisfied.

Mineral problems with beet pulp are the opposite of straw. It’s too heavy on calcium. You can balance this by feeding 50:50 whole oats and beet pulp, or adding 2 oz. of rice bran (no calcium added), 4 oz. of wheat bran or 6 to 8 oz. of ground stabilized flaxseed to each pound of beet pulp.

These adjustments do increase the calorie intake even further though so reduce the total amount accordingly. For example, as a starting point when going from 10 lbs. of hay, substitute 5 lbs. of hay 2 lbs. of one of the mixtures. After you soak the beet pulp portion, the totalpounds taken in will actually be higher than the 10 lbs. of hay you started with. Adjust up or down as needed
Complete Feeds: Using complete feeds and/or a blend of hays and/or beet pulp with grains/complete feeds are all good options when hay is in short supply. The use of a complete feed is most appropriate for a horse that’s accustomed to receiving grain inhis daily diet (25% or more on a weight basis) because the products do rely substantially on grains.

The higher the fiber content on the label, the more fiber-based the complete feed is. There is a huge variation between brands, so read labels carefully. The most roughage-based complete feeds will contain close to 20% fiber. Complete feeds also often rely pretty heavily on fat to boost their calorie content. To locate a brand of complete feet that is closest to hay look for:

• Fat 3.5% or lower.

• Fiber close to 20%.

Look for feeding recommendations that call for close to 1.5% of the horse’s body weight at maintenance, which would be approximately 16.5 lbs. of feed for an 1100-lb. horse.

Remember that if you’re using a complete or senior feed that contains grains and only partially substituting for hay, you must also reduce the grain fed. For example, if you substitute the feed for half of your hay ration, cut the grain in half, too.

Bottom Line

Your best bet, if possible, when you simply can’t find traditional baled hay is to substitute hay pellets, bagged hay or hay cubes. These can all be wet down and made softer for chewing, especially for older horses and those prone to choke. Cubes, especially, can be extremelyhard and may not be the best bet for very old or very young horses. For these horses, a complete feed might be your better choice.
The advantage of a complete commercial feed is that protein, vitamin and mineral concerns have been addressed for you. The ideal way to use them is as their name implies—as a complete diet. However, you need to consider how the feed compares to what the horse was getting before.

If no grain was being fed, choose a complete feed with low-fat, high-fiber, high-feeding rate. Nutrena Kwik, Wrangler Complete and LMFTaco are excellent choices, with Nutrena Kwik by a nose for our top pick, with its low fat level of 2% and fiber at 20%.

If you can still feed some hay and your horse was getting about 20 to 25% of his daily diet, by weight, from grains, look for a complete feed that recommends feeding with hay and has a low recommended total daily feeding amount for maintenance (10 lbs. or less). We like Wrangler Complete and KERx Re-Leve best for these horses.

Note: Our chart lists senior and complete feeds that we found had a fairly wide national distribution. Commercial grains/feeds tend to be regional, so you may not find all of these products in your area. If this occurs, bring this article to your feed dealer and tell him or her that you want to find a complete feed that closely matches whichever national brand you’ve decided best suits your needs. You may also be able to do the work yourself by calling local feed manufacturers directly. Most manufacturers have a nutritionist to help you choose a product.

Well, we made it home. At least I think we all did. We had about 40 in attendance, most from the local area. If you chose to skip it this time, you were smart! The roads were nasty.

We did enjoy a nice meal, shared some laughs and exchanged some great gifts.

I will post the list of award winners here shortly, I apologize for the delay, but I forgot to get the complete list from Janice before heading home.

Sportsmanship Award was presented to Mike Moores - he received a snazzy DEBRSC jacket

High Point Youth Trophy went to Emily Hawkins

High Point Adult Trophy went to me (Andrea) - Now, I must have gotten this by the "skin of my teeth," because Adam Smith won just about every championship in each adult class. I think I "squeaked" by because I ride in games AND pleasure classes.... Adam cleaned up though, in the individual equitation/pleasure classes. WTG Adam! Nice Horse! Nancy Curtis cleaned up in the game classes with Babe (aka "the streak!")

High Point Horse Award was presented to Tiffany Anthony for MANDY - Mandy worked really hard this year winning lots of ribbons and trophies for both Tiffany and Megan Lank. Mandy the Magnificent!!

There were also some "memorable moment" awards which were presented just for laughs. I will post them here over the next week or so. Ok, starting now....

Memorable Moment award presented to one of our junior members. This member has always been a trend setter, always on top of the latest in show ring fashion. You may remember, if you attended our Youth Show, that one participant stood out in the crowd. Now the other kids would never admit it, but they were all in awe of her perfectly matched outfit of purple, green, pink, which complimented her furry red saddle so perfectly. In fact, we didn’t know then, but a photographer from a famous fashion magazine was present. He was so impressed by our club member’s appearance that he snapped a picture. Well, the editor of this magazine was equally impressed and put our own Emily Hawkins on the cover of STYLE MAGAZINE!!!!

More "memorable moments" will be posted in future blog entries!

We also presented Trail Program Awards. Certificates, t-shirts, baseball caps and sweatshirts were awarded, depending on the number of hours accumulated. I will post that information soon as well.

Annual Awards Banquet and Christmas Party WILL GO ON!

Hey all - The consensus is that we should go ahead and have the party tonight. This weather is supposed to clear out later today with maybe an occasional flurry tonight. Along the coast here, we got a dusting and it's now raining with temps going up. I know that further inland, you all got some snow! Again, though it's supposed to let up later today, with temps above freezing. After all, this is late fall in Maine, and weather happens.

Our concern is that so many people have other plans for next weekend and we have no guarantee that next weekend there won't be even worse weather.

So, if you can, please come to the Whiting Town Hall for the festivities. 4PM (Earlier if you want to help decorate/set up)

If you decide not to come, that's perfectly understandable. It is supposed to get colder with more snow later (like after midnight) - but this IS New England and we can just never tell.

If you come, don't forget to bring you food pantry donations, any used tack you might like to donate to the sale, money for raffle and 50/50 - a gift to exchange and something for the potluck!

Brandy's Better!

I just got a call from Leslie who is enroute home with Brandy in tow! She reports that he's on the mend and doing well.

She also reports that the vet bills are not as bad as expected and turned out very reasonable, considering the level of care he received at Annabessacook Veterinary Clinic in Monmouth. Leslie said that Dr. Jessica Michael did an excellent job!

She said that she appreciates the offers, but she and Ron will be able to handle the vet bill (much less than expected!)

Club members Leslie and Ben Gallant's mini, Brandy, is at Annabessacook Veterinary Clinic struggling with a serious bout of colic. Things were touch and go as of very early Sunday AM - but as of this evening, he's starting to come around. We are talking IV's and everything short of surgery (that was going to be the next step).

The little guy is hanging in there, but he sure could use your prayers and well-wishes. Also, I can't imagine what Leslie's vet bills are going to look like, but if you'd care to help her out, I am sure she'd appreciate it! (I am told that overnight at this clinic is $1000 per night!).

Awards Banquet/Christmas Party

Can you believe it? December is almost upon us. And next Sunday is our annual awards banquet and Christmas party. Whiting Town Hall 4PM December 7. If you want to arrive early and help "purty the place up," that would be great.

I hope you'll try to get there. It's always a good time and chance for everyone to catch up with one another.

We are going to try to cram a lot of things into this one event, including a tack sale in the corner (possibly in another room, but more than likely, we will set up an area in the back of the room) - This tack sale will help fund Bono's Hay for Horses. If you have something you can donate to the sale, please bring it with you. Hopefully others will find something they need and make a purchase! What ever does not sell at the banquet will be sold online -either through local classifieds, or perhaps on ebay.

There will also be a RAFFLE where you might win a horse-head wreath, a traditional wreath, a set of magnetic show number holders, and possibly some other things. Tickets will be $1 each or 3 for $5.

Also, please bring an item (or items) to donate to the Whiting Food Pantry. It's been tough all over, and aside from our efforts to help needy horses, we also need to think of our fellow human beings!

Aside from the usual awards that will be presented, the "On The Trail" awards will be presented as well.

Of course, please don't forget to bring a pot luck dish to share. As a matter of fact, if you'd like to list her (via the COMMENTS function - which should work now, I just have to review each post before it gets published) what you are planning to bring, it would be helpful, so we can have a variety of menu items.

Finally, there's the gift exchange. Please bring one wrapped item per person for the gift exchange. Nothing too elaborate, just a little something to brighten someone else's evening.

Bono's Hay For Horses - Here's how it will work

Bono's Hay For Horses,the DEBRSC campaign to help horse owners in need is standing by.

I think the quickest way to explain it, will be via this press release, which was sent to various newspapers in the region. I will add more information below:

WHITING - -The Down East Border Riders Saddle Club has organized an emergency food pantry for horses and other equines. Many of us are feeling the effects of the sagging economy with high fuel and grocery bills, rising unemployment rates, and a long cold winter on the way. Horse owners feel it too – and have the added responsibility of providing hay and grain for their equine companions. Many horse owners plan ahead for the winter by purchasing large amounts of hay in the summer and storing it for use over the winter. Some, however, cannot afford to make a large one-time purchase or do not have appropriate storage for large amounts of hay and must purchase hay weekly or monthly. For those people, a disruption in cash flow can result in the inability to purchase food for their horses. Interruptions may be caused by an unexpected automobile or home repair, a layoff or job loss, or a family illness or emergency. For this reason, the DEBRSC established Bono’s Hay For Horses. The program was named in honor of a club member’s horse that suddenly died in October.Through generous donations of club members and others, the organizers were able to purchase 100 bales of hay from Bono’s owner, Lorna Konyak of Columbia, who offered the hay at a reduced rate after Bono died. This hay will be delivered to various areas around Washington County so that it will be easily accessible.

If you find yourself in a situation which causes a temporary feed shortage for your horses, you may contact one of the volunteer committee members to make arrangements to receive up to five (or possibly more) bales of hay or a bag of grain. “This program is designed as a bridge – a temporary fix,” explains DEBRSC president and program organizer Andrea Barstow. “We cannot feed someone’s horse or entire herd all winter long. But we can help out in a crisis; keep the animals fed until other arrangements can be made.” Barstow adds, “The response from our club members has been terrific. We had donations enough within just a few days to purchase almost 100 bales of hay. Even our junior members reached into their piggy banks and bought bales.”

The club has made local Animal Welfare Agent, Chrissy Perry aware of the program. “We are certainly in support of this effort and would encourage people to contact one of the volunteers to discuss your situation,” she said.

The hay will be distributed around the region, so that it will be easily accessible. The main storage is in Machias, with bales also being stored at various committee members' barns.

If you are in need, contact one of the committee members who will discuss your situation. NOTE: We will make every effort to keep your information confidential, however, discussion amongst committee members will take place, so we all are aware of current inventory and where it is going. The information will not be made public.

This program is designed to get you through a short week or month - so that your horses don't go without because you had an unexpected financial strain.

The typical person in need will receive five bales of hay and possibly a bag of grain. Your case may require more or less hay & grain. Each case will be handled according to the number of animals and the emergency situation. We do not have a huge supply of hay, so we cannot feed a large number of animals at one time. However, we will help you with finding hay as well. We may, for instance, be able to help you locate some round bales or a new square bale supplier. Just call and ask for help when you need it. We will do our best to assist.

We have also established accounts at Dickinson's Feed & Seed in East Machias and Newcomb's Gun & Saddle in Perry to purchase grain, forage extender, alfalfa cubes or beet pulp. You will need to talk to me (andrea) or Beth to arrange for grain.

Bono's Hay for Horses! - Nov 13 Update

We don't want to see any of our horses looking like this poor thing! To be real, this is a Photoshopped picture of an otherwise healthy horse. So don't worry, I am not trying to embarrass anyone. It's just a reminder of what could happen this winter if some of our communitys' horses end up hungry! (I hope whoever I stole this picture from doesn't get P.O.d at me!)

The goal of"Bono's Hay for Horses" is to help people like you and me get through a rough patch. We are not planning to feed someone's entire herd all winter. Our program is designed to help feed for a short period, while the owner catches up, or makes other arrangements.

The committee is going to meet on Sunday, November 16 at Beth Atwood's in Machias. I don't have a definite time yet, but it will likely be mid afternoon. If you would like to attend the meeting, please feel free to do so. If you need directions, you can call Beth at Dickinson's 9-5 at 255-3001 or at home at 255-4693. We will be going over inventories, storage issues, protocol and criteria for requests.

UPDATE - We have collect enough for 77 bales of hay so far,- this includes two actual hay donations and the rest cash donations. Donations for 24 more bales are pending. (If you have pledged, PLEASE send your check or paypal payment ASAP). If you have been meaning or planning to donate- please put your words into ACTION! We have met our 100 bale goal, and that's awesome. But I suspect this is going to be a long, cold winter for many - with more layoffs, higher fuel prices and a general slump in the economy. 100 bales is not going to last long.

Also, you can go directly to Dickinson's Feed & Seed and make a cash donation for a future grain, hay stretcher, or beet pulp purchase for a needy horse. (I am going to check with Newcomb's about something similar, I haven't been able to do this yet as I had to go to MA for a family matter).
